Position SummaryPACO Group is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support major transportation, heavy civil, and infrastructure projects. The Geotechnical Engineer will serve as an on-site technical representative responsible for monitoring, inspecting, documenting, and verifying geotechnical construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents, approved plans, safety requirements, quality standards, and applicable codes.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect and monitor geotechnical construction activities, including support of excavation, deep foundations, micropiles, secant piles, driven piles, drilled shafts, earthwork, ground improvement, tunneling-related work, and retaining systems.
- Verify that contractor work is performed in accordance with contract requirements, approved drawings, specifications, and applicable ASTM, AASHTO, NYS, NYC, and OSHA standards.
- Monitor and document subsurface investigations, SPT borings, test pits, soil and rock classification, rock core review, and field testing.
- Witness and document load testing, grout testing, compaction testing, concrete testing, soil testing, vibration monitoring, and other required special inspections.
- Review material certifications, testing reports, inspection reports, and contractor work plans for compliance.
- Monitor contractor safety performance, excavation safety measures, traffic control activities, and site protection procedures.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, photo logs, field diaries, equipment records, workforce counts, testing documentation, and progress records.
- Upload daily reports, photographs, inspection records, and supporting documentation into the project EDMS/CMS or other designated document control system within required time frames.
- Coordinate with resident engineers, contractors, designers, testing laboratories, surveyors, and project stakeholders to resolve field issues and document project progress.
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a field-based engineering or inspection role on large-scale heavy civil, transit or infrastructure projects.
- Minimum 3 years of experience with support of geotechnical field inspection excavation, deep foundations, micro piles, secant piles, drilled shafts, ground improvement, soil stabilization, earthwork, or subsurface investigations.
- Experience preparing daily inspection reports, photo documentation, testing records, and field reports.
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, geotechnical materials, field testing, safety protocols, and quality assurance procedures.
- Ability to work independently in active construction environments and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience supporting PANYNJ, MTA, NYSDOT, NJDOT, Amtrak, Gateway Development Commission, or other major public infrastructure projects.
- Experience with EDMS/CMS platforms, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, GIS, or geotechnical laboratory/data management software.
- Possession of one or more of the following certifications is highly desirable:
- New York State Intern Geologist (I.G.) or equivalent Geologist-in-Training certification
- NICET Construction Materials Testing (CMT) – Soils Level II or higher
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
- ACI Aggregate Testing Technician – Level I
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Safety Certification
- ANPGA Nuclear Density Gauge Safety Certification
- U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Certification
