Altius Talent is partnering with a well-established freight forwarding and customs brokerage firm to identify an experienced Customs Entry Writer for their New Jersey operation. Our client offers a stable, collaborative environment for professionals looking to grow within international trade compliance.
Position Overview:The Customs Entry Writer will be responsible for the accurate and timely preparation and filing of customs entries, ensuring full compliance with CBP regulations across a range of import commodities and entry types. This role is well-suited to a detail-oriented professional with strong knowledge of HTS classification and ABI entry processes.
Key Responsibilities:- Prepare, review, and transmit customs entries (Type 01, 03, 11, etc.) via ABI in a timely and accurate manner
- Classify merchandise using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
- Verify entry documentation for accuracy, including invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading
- Ensure compliance with CBP regulations, PGA requirements (FDA, USDA, EPA, etc.), and other regulatory bodies
- Communicate with customers, carriers, and government agencies to resolve entry discrepancies or holds
- Monitor entries for cargo release, exams, and duty payment status
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with CBP recordkeeping requirements
- Assist with post-entry corrections, protests, and audits as needed
Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a Customs Entry Writer within a freight forwarding or customs brokerage environment
- Strong working knowledge of HTS classification, ABI, and CBP entry filing procedures
- Familiarity with PGA requirements and relevant regulatory agencies
- Proficiency with customs entry software (e.g., Cargowise, Descartes, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Licensed Customs Broker credential a plus, but not required
