Accounting Technician AP - INT

Position Summary

Under supervision, performs a variety of general accounting tasks to compile, prepare, review, and verify financial and statistical records in support of the Finance directorate at the Chesapeake, VA headquarters.

• Creates, organizes, maintains, and updates files and records using database, spreadsheet, and other online applications, as well as manual systems.
• Maintains an audit trail of documents and records; develops report formats and prepares required accounting and financial reports based on retrieved data.
• Creates and maintains spreadsheets, journals, ledgers, logs, worksheets, and other records.
• Classifies accounting transactions, verifies accuracy and completeness of the accounting data, and summarizes transactions.
• Prepares control documents or posting documents reflecting entries to be made.
• Communicates with internal and external clients, providing technical support, answering questions, and assisting with interpreting and following proper accounting procedures.
• Assists in training staff to comply with proper procedures, rules and regulations.
• Abstracts data reflecting financial condition and operating results; presents this data in statements and reports.
• Examines accounts to verify accuracy and adequacy of supporting data; prepares worksheets or reports of findings, discrepancies, and required corrective entries.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of progressively responsible accounting experience, demonstrating knowledge of accepted accounting principles and practices, use of accounting software, and performance of accounting duties.
• Intermediate experience with Excel.
• Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required.

• Associate’s degree in accounting from an accredited university.

• Residency requirements:
