Description

The Scale Attendant assists customers hauling residential and specific types of commercial waste to SPSA transfer stations or directly to the landfill. The attendant greets customers to verify residency, records visits, weighs vehicles, screens for unauthorized waste, operates an industrial scale recording device to determine tonnage, and collects payments by credit card or commercial account. Work is performed under the supervision of the Scale Attendant Supervisor, with input from the Transfer Station Supervisor.

Full‑time Scale Attendants work rotating schedules across all SPSA scale house locations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • (50%) Greets customers, verifies residency, records visits, weighs vehicles, screens for unauthorized waste, and informs customers of proper disposal policies and procedures.
  • (10%) Processes customer credit card transactions and ensures balances are correct at the end of each shift.
  • (30%) Receives customer phone calls and provides directions and information while assisting in person customers efficiently, professionally, and friendly.
  • (10%) Ensures scales and recording devices are operating properly; reports malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Accurately weighs trucks, records data using proper codes, vehicle , customer account number, and waste type to generate credit transaction tickets for customers and review by SPSA departments in a timely manner.
  • Screens trucks for hazardous or unauthorized waste visually and by asking the driver to verify load compositions; reroutes trucks to site supervisor if necessary.
  • Informs customers of proper disposal policies and procedures in a clear, concise, and courteous manner.
  • Processes customer transactions smoothly and efficiently, maintaining excellent accuracy while dealing with varying rate structures and load compositions.
  • Provides useful directions and information to customers and handles phone calls in an efficient, professional, and friendly manner.
  • Assists with training new staff as needed.
  • Rotates among various SPSA work locations and adapts to schedules, vacancies, and operational needs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of demonstrated experience in customer service, data entry, scale operation, and cashiering.
  • Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation required for traveling among SPSA scale house locations.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to work across SPSA scale house locations as scheduled.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with customers, employees, and the general public.
  • Effective communication with customers in person and by phone.
  • Proficiency in operating SPSA scale facilities.
  • Multi‑tasking ability to manage inbound and outbound customers while answering phone calls.
  • Basic arithmetic for simple computations.
  • Accurate and rapid computerized data entry.
  • Troubleshooting minor data processing problems.
  • Credit card payment transaction skills.
  • Recognition of various waste types.
  • Understanding of changing tipping fees and data codes.
  • Use of computers to record and verify customer information and complete transactions.
  • Independence and follow‑through on supervisor instructions.
Working Conditions

The position is located in the scale house office at an open‑window area where tractor‑trailer traffic is frequent. The activity can introduce dust and exhaust fumes into the work area. Extreme heat and cold can make temperature regulation difficult.

Machines, Tools & Equipment

Regular use of computer, telephone, credit card processing equipment, basic office equipment, long‑handed grabber‑reacher tools for exchanges with drivers, and cleaning equipment (brooms, mops, surface cleaners).

Physical & Mental Requirements
  • Read vehicle license plates, driver licenses, and computer monitor under varying light conditions.
  • Accurate, rapid data entry.
  • Sit, stand, and reach at the customer window for eight hours in relatively small spaces.
  • Clear, concise verbal communication with customers and supervisors.
  • Maintain a pleasant and efficient demeanor under adverse conditions.
  • Shift focus as needed for tasks requiring immediate attention.
  • Answer phone inquiries or transfer to proper extension while assisting in‑person customers.
  • Accurate processing of credit card transactions and balance verification at shift end.
  • Clean the scale house each shift (sweep, mop, counter top, windows, waste baskets).
  • Adapt to daily duties that may vary by location.
  • Work in a fast‑paced environment inherent to in‑person customer service roles.
