The Physical Education Teacher Assistant performs responsible support and paraprofessional work to assist the physical education teacher in implementing engaging, safe, and standards-aligned instruction. This position supports classroom management, equipment setup, student supervision, and activity facilitation. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Education Teacher.
This is a physically active role that requires frequent movement, lifting, and interaction with students both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist the PE teacher in preparing for daily lessons, including equipment setup and takedown.
- Support instructional delivery by supervising students during activities and reinforcing directions and routines.
- Promote safe participation by modeling correct movement patterns and ensuring proper use of equipment.
- Assist with classroom management and behavior monitoring to maintain a positive and respectful learning environment.
- Supervise students during room transitions, hallway movement, and water breaks.
- Encourage student participation and support inclusion for students with varying ability levels.
- Maintain and organize physical education supplies and equipment; report damage or safety concerns.
- Monitor attendance and assist with basic documentation and clerical tasks, including filing, photocopying, and inventory.
- Provide student assistance as needed during class activities, including minor first aid under supervision.
- Escort students to/from PE class as needed.
- Uphold and model school rules, safety protocols, and positive health and fitness habits.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the PE teacher or administrator.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- 48 hours of college credits or successful completion of the Parapro test preferred.
- Must meet all local and state requirements for employment in a public school setting.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Completion of division-level training related to student supervision, behavior management, or health/safety protocols may be required after employment.
- General knowledge of physical education concepts, practices, and activities for school-aged children.
- Ability to work cooperatively with teachers and students in a physically active setting.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and student records where applicable.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage and supervise students safely and effectively.
- Basic knowledge of instructional and recreational equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with teachers, staff, students, and parents.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work environment includes gymnasiums, fields, and outdoor spaces; exposure to varying weather conditions may occur.
- Requires frequent walking, running, standing, bending, lifting, and movement.
- Ability to lift/push/pull up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to respond promptly to physical activity or safety situations involving students.
- Must be able to speak, see, hear, talk, read, and write to effectively exchange information and supervise students.
- Timely and reliable attendance and adherence to an established work schedule is essential to this position.
