Job Description

Faculty members are responsible for teaching discipline courses, planning, organizing, and delivering instruction, and providing support to students in various formats. The role also includes participation in faculty governance, committee work, student advising, and community activities.

Functional Responsibilities
  • Teaching. Responsible for creating a learning environment that facilitates students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills in a discipline and/or program. Teaching encompasses four components:
    • Instructional Design: utilize and distribute established course syllabus using Syllabus Builder as found in the college’s i-INCURR; participate in textbook selection and/or learning resources; design and implement assessment strategies that effectively measure student achievement of established course learning outcomes.
    • Instructional Delivery: align course activities with student learning outcomes; employ active learning strategies; employ appropriate technology; provide timely and meaningful feedback.
    • Instructional Effectiveness: deliver instruction aligned with stated learning outcomes; participate in student surveys of instruction; conduct assessments early in the course; analyze ratings and develop action plans.
    • Instructional Expertise: maintain currency in the assigned teaching discipline(s) and instructional technology.
  • Scholarly and Creative Engagement: participate in conferences, workshops, academic coursework, scholarly research, publications, and grant activity associated with the teaching discipline(s).
  • Institutional Responsibility: fulfill institutional responsibilities including participation in college development and evaluation plans, publishing office hours, serving as an academic advisor, participating in required meetings, maintaining attendance reports, submitting grades, adhering to policies, and maintaining collegial relationships.
  • Service: quality participation and commitment to students, the college, and community organizations, divided into three categories:
    • College representation with direct connection to the faculty member’s position.
    • College citizenship supporting college or VCCS initiatives as a committee member.
    • Community citizenship as part of civic involvement.
  • Responsibilities may include work during day, evening, and/or weekend programs, as well as distance learning programs.
  • Minimum Qualifications A. Applicable to all teaching faculty positions:
  • Willingness to design and implement curriculum to support and improve student learning.
  • Ability to develop and adapt teaching strategies to accommodate diverse students.
  • Ability to use consistent assessment measures to enhance student learning.
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, proven teaching strategies that promote student success.
  • Willingness to use emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods, including online delivery, hybrid courses, content software, web enhancements, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to stay current and improve knowledge of the discipline.
  • Teaching experience in higher education required; community college experience preferred.
  • B. Applicable to the specific position:
  • Appropriate level of education (required):
    Master’s or doctorate degree in Biology or Biological Sciences.
  • Teaching experience in General Biology, with preferred experience in Environmental Science and/or Anatomy and Physiology.
