Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking an outgoing, detail‑oriented, enthusiastic Library Assistant II to perform a variety of library and clerical tasks at any public service desk—Adult Services, Circulation, and Youth and Family Services—with a primary focus on the Adult Services Department in a busy area library. The role requires exemplary communication, customer service, and organizational skills, as well as the capability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities- Assist with, participate in, and lead in‑house programs, orientations, and one‑on‑one tech help sessions, including those involving the Digital Media Studio. A working knowledge of photography and videography equipment is preferred.
- Assist and participate in Student Success Center programs, providing homework help in math and reading.
- Assist with community garden and seed library programs, including basic garden maintenance and promotion of sustainable practices.
- Participate in off‑site and outreach visits to community partners for indoor and outdoor programs.
- Provide front‑line customer service and circulation support: register new users, maintain patron accounts, check materials in/out, process fees and donations, handle cash and point‑of‑sale transactions, and maintain accurate records.
- Assist patrons with technology and resources: public computers, tablets, online databases, reader’s advisories, and library equipment; support collection maintenance through shelving, sorting, and inspecting materials, and supervise teen volunteers.
- Operate and maintain specialized library equipment such as Automated Material Handling systems and makerspace tools; provide support across various service points as needed.
- Education: One year of college in liberal arts or library science, or equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months full‑time equivalent library or customer service experience; six months of public library experience preferred.
- License: Valid driver’s license with a driving record compliant with City Driving Standards.
- Ability to work hours beyond the normal schedule in response to short‑term needs or emergencies.
- Experience with automated circulation systems highly desired.
- Public library‑related experience desired.
- Experience working with computers highly desired.
- Comfortable learning and demonstrating usage of computers, the Internet, library catalog, eReaders, eBooks, research databases, e‑mail, photocopiers, and fax machines.
- Flexibility and willingness to learn new tools such as laser cutters, Cricuts, and 3D printing; ability to support training and assistance with sewing and crafting.
