The City of Chesapeake is seeking an organized and detail-oriented Accountant I to join the Department of Human Services, Division of Community Programs. This position supports the Division’s financial operations by managing financial processes, monitoring program funding, and ensuring accurate reporting. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver committed to providing reliable financial support that helps strengthen services and programs within the Chesapeake community.
Key Responsibilities- Perform accounting functions related to the financial administration of Community Programs and operational activities
- Review, analyze, and maintain financial records to ensure accuracy, compliance, and proper documentation
- Assist with budget preparation, monitoring, and reconciliation of program funds, expenditures, and revenues
- Process and review accounts payable, purchase orders, reimbursements, and other financial transactions
- Prepare financial reports, expenditure summaries, and budget tracking documents to support program management and decision-making
- Review account activity, verify transactions, and resolve discrepancies to ensure accurate financial records
- Maintain organized financial documentation and records to support internal reviews
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure effective financial coordination and compliance
- Assist with the development and implementation of financial procedures, process improvements, and internal controls
- Work independently under general supervision while managing assigned projects, priorities, and deadlines
- Support programs that directly impact the well‑being of Chesapeake residents

Required QualificationsVocational/Educational Requirement:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field.
Experience:
Minimum of two years of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
May require a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.
Special Requirements:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short‑term department needs and/or City‑wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
- Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment, attention to detail, and accuracy in financial record‑keeping and accounting processes.
- Experience with governmental accounting, grant‑funded programs, or financial reporting preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal departments and external partners.
- Familiarity with accounting principles, financial systems, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and maintaining confidentiality of financial information.
