Summary
The Director of Patient Accounts is responsible for the daily coordination, management, and direction of all phases of the hospital's inpatient and outpatient billing in order to ensure accurate and timely billing and collections from third party payors and patients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Establish and maintain Key Performance Indicators to monitor performance relative to industry benchmarks and corporate goals.
- Function as a key member of Revenue Cycle leadership to support and execute key initiatives
- Implement and assure timely and accurate compliance with appropriate billing procedures, insuring that the inpatient and outpatient accounts receivable records are kept in accordance with the established policies and procedures
- Manage the inpatient and outpatient billing areas, advising supervisors on the day-to-day implementation and interpretation of changes to ensure that all policies and procedures are being complied with
- Review and maintain accountability for the timely and accurate entry of patient charges by the different departments
- Implement controls to insure appropriate billing submission and payment cycles
- Establish appropriate procedures for follow-up on third party approvals, billing, and collection on all overdue accounts in conjunction with the Credit department
- Supervise, train, and orient all personnel
- Evaluate employee performance and make recommendations for personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary action
- Plan educational programs for department personnel
- Maintain established hospital/department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control programs
- Prepare annual budget for the Patient Accounts department including inpatient and outpatient billing and credit
- Act as a resource for insurance and billing questions, and to other departments for reimbursement questions and research projects
- Maintain appropriate internal controls over accounts receivable
- Monitor activities with insurance companies, admitting, medical records, data processing, patients, and physicians
- Keep abreast of all reimbursement billing procedures of third party and private insurance payers
- Maintain appropriate controls and reporting of the collection companies activities
- Maintain and update appropriate sections of master files, COM profiles, form generation tables, and all PFS (patient financial services) pathways
- Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree
Experience: With Bachelor's Degree - 7+ years in a management position in a hospital patient service environment; without Bachelor's Degree - 10+ years of recent hospital patient accounting leadership experience
