In accordance with the National Scope and Standards of Diabetes Educators, as well as the National Standards for Diabetes Education and Support, the registered dietitian nutritionist assesses patients' needs and designs, implements, and evaluates teaching plans. The role includes providing individual nutritional counseling in areas such as diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia, cardiac risk, hypoglycemia, general nutrition and wellness, pregnancy, gestational diabetes, GI disorders, liver disorders, malnutrition, cancer, kidney disorders, and pulmonary nutrition.

The dietitian also facilitates programs like group sessions, seminars, cooking demonstrations, supermarket tours, and community lectures, working with an interdisciplinary team. Promoting positive behavior change through motivational interviewing, goal setting, and effective communication is essential, as is evaluating and addressing barriers to change.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide outpatient medical nutritional counseling, including programs like Healthy Me-Diabetes, Diabetes Prevention Program, and others.
  • Conduct group sessions on weight management, diabetes, cardiac and pulmonary risk, and general wellness.
  • Deliver diabetes self-management education across all nine content areas defined by standards.
  • Assess outpatient nutritional needs and develop care plans with therapeutic diets.
  • Educate patients on behavior modification related to diet.
  • Document patient progress in electronic health records.
  • Communicate patient progress with healthcare providers.
  • Assist in the assessment, implementation, and evaluation stages of the nutrition care process.
  • Develop and revise individual and group intervention programs.
  • Participate in the Diabetes Program Quality Improvement Plan and Advisory Committee.
  • Facilitate community programs, seminars, cooking demonstrations, and tours.
  • Engage with local employers to assess needs and services.
  • Answer calls and provide information about programs and services.
  • Refer patients to appropriate programs and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum

    Education and Experience

    Successful completion of a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist program. Preferred:
    Bachelor or Master of Science in Nutrition or Dietetics. At least 2 years of experience teaching nutritional concepts in hospital or outpatient settings.

    Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

    Must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) with current status.
