Job Description
The City of Chesapeake is seeking a qualified legal professional to provide legal representation and advisory support to the City Treasurer and the Treasurer’s Office. This position plays a key role in managing bankruptcy matters, advising on collections and compliance issues, and supporting the overall legal and operational functions of the Treasurer’s Office. The role may also serve as Deputy Treasurer as assigned.
This position works with a high level of independence within established City policies and procedures and requires strong legal judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage complex matters.
- Represent the Treasurer’s Office and the City of Chesapeake in bankruptcy related proceedings.
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the Treasurer and Treasurer’s Office on operational and legal matters.
- Research, advise on, and support collection efforts, including representing the Treasurer’s Office before local courts.
- Research and interpret laws, regulations, and legal precedents related to taxation, collections, and bankruptcy.
- Analyze data and legal requirements to assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Draft complex legal documents and conduct detailed legal research using computerized systems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
This position involves sustained computer work, extensive legal research, and the preparation of formal legal documents. The successful candidate must demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with leadership, courts, and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications- Jurisdictional requirement: a juris doctorate.
Minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications and LicensesCommonwealth of Virginia Law License.
Special RequirementsEmployees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred QualificationsThe City of Chesapeake Department of Human Resources is serving as an advertising agent for this vacancy. Screening and selection will be handled by the office of the Treasurer.
