Working Title: Custodian I - Full Time (Applicant Pool)

Brief Position Overview:

Applications are being accepted for the custodial pool at MSU.

There are a variety of shifts in these departments across the campus:

  • Facilities Services
  • Culinary Services
  • Family & Graduate Housing
  • Residence Life
  • Sports Facilities
  • Strand Union

Position Number: Multiple Positions

Department: Facility Services

Division: Office of VP for Administration & Finance

Custodians provide cleaning and maintenance service for MSU. Primary emphasis is on:

  • Cleaning areas (including restrooms)
  • Carpeted and hard-surface floor care
  • Trash removal
  • Other related duties

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience with custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, etc.
  • Experience working effectively with minimal or no supervision.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Certifications, classes completed, or knowledge of safety procedures utilized in a custodial, janitorial or housekeeping position.

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Be able to positively and professionally perform all the functions of the position
  • Consistently exercise initiative and good judgment
  • Effectively and safely operate work-related equipment and tools
  • Accurately follow written and oral instructions and procedures
  • Work effectively and efficiently in close cooperation with staff in a team-oriented environment
  • Be able to complete multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Quickly adapt to changing priorities
  • Possess strong organizational skills
  • Be highly motivated and work with minimal supervision
  • Have excellent attention to detail
  • Represent the department and MSU to others in a professional and courteous manner

Physical Requirements:

  • Moving up to 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 100lbs
  • Moving items (such as stacking chairs, folding tables, setting up portable stages, carrying floor sealer, etc.) up and down stairs
  • Moving up and down stairs
  • Moving up and down ladders
  • Stationary or moving about for extended periods of time
  • Gripping handles on cleaning equipment
  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.
