The Director, Liability Claims Counsel is a full-time, on-site role based in Chesapeake, VA. This position is responsible for overseeing and managing liability claims, including general liability and related insurance matters arising from store and distribution center operations. Day-to-day tasks include evaluating claims exposure, directing and coordinating litigation strategy, managing outside counsel, negotiating settlements, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and applicable laws.
The role collaborates closely with risk management, operations, and customer service teams to reduce claims frequency and severity through process improvements and training. The Director also prepares reports and analysis for leadership, supports budgeting for liability and insurance programs, and contributes to strategic initiatives that mitigate risk and protect the company’s interests.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate claims data, assess risk exposure, and support informed decision‑making.
- Experience with insurance and liability coverage, including understanding of policies, carriers, and related regulatory requirements.
- Claims management expertise, including oversight of claim handling, litigation management, and settlement processes.
- Customer service orientation to address internal and external stakeholders professionally and constructively.
- Negotiation skills to manage settlements, work with opposing counsel, and achieve cost‑effective, fair outcomes.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Several years of progressively responsible experience in liability claims, insurance defense, or risk management, preferably within retail or a similar industry.
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team, manage multiple complex matters, and work cross‑functionally with business partners.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present legal and claims information clearly to non‑legal audiences.
- High ethical standards, sound judgment, and strong organizational and time‑management skills.
