Job Description

The Operations Section of Public Works is seeking an experienced Traffic Operations Superintendent to oversee traffic field operations and assist with emergency response efforts related to natural and man made disasters. The ideal Traffic Operations Superintendent will have experience performing these duties in a local government setting and possess the leadership skills needed to inspire and motivate employees to achieve the Department’s mission efficiently and effectively.

The Traffic Operations Superintendent
’s responsibilities include:

  • Conducting field investigations to determine operational traffic engineering needs.
  • Planning, assigning, scheduling, and supervising traffic activities, including the erection, installation, fabrication, repair, and quality control inspection of traffic control devices.
  • Overseeing and approving expenditures and preparing reports.
  • Writing specifications for tools, materials, and supplies and maintaining an adequate inventory.
  • Investigating and responding to traffic inquiries by telephone, correspondence, or in person.
  • Performing related tasks as necessary, including planning street closures and detours.
  • Ensuring employees receive appropriate safety and equipment training.
  • Performing supervisory duties, including work order data entry, timecard management and approval, employee performance evaluations, staff counseling, and the establishment of performance measures.
  • Assisting with and executing activities during inclement weather and emergency management responses. This position may work 12 hour shifts before, during, and after natural or man made disasters to help restore essential City services.

The Traffic Operations Superintendent must be able to perform work outdoors in all weather conditions and lay out work zones, including coordinating with Miss Utility. The position requires knowledge of traffic signals, pavement markings, and work zone safety, along with the ability to plan jobs and match available resources to operational needs.

The successful candidate must also be able to maintain work orders, logs, forms, records, material expenditures, equipment status, and other work related information and perform the data entry necessary to capture that information. Experience with Kronos and Maximo is desirable. IMSA Signal Level 1, IMSA Pavement Marking Level 1, and VDOT Advanced Work Zone Safety certifications are preferred.
