PUMP MECHANICFull Time – Chesapeake, VA, USA
Job Summary – The Pump Mechanic is responsible for disassembly, mechanical inspection, troubleshooting, and re‑assembly of all types of pumps and blowers, including Submersible, Close‑Coupled, End Suction Radial, Vertical Turbine, Axial Split Case, Centrifugal, and Blowers.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or certificate from a trade/technical school plus 5+ years in the rotating machinery industry, or 10+ years of hands‑on experience in lieu of certification.
- Basic 3‑phase electrical knowledge and familiarity with standard electrical testing equipment (e.g., megohmmeters, multimeters, ammeters, winding resistance meters, LV/HV test panels).
- Hands‑on experience with vertical turbine pumps – installation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of vertical turbine pump design, components, and performance characteristics.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and hydraulic issues specific to vertical turbine systems.
- Proficiency in using mechanical measuring equipment (inside/outside micrometers, vernier calipers, depth gauges, steel rulers).
- Ability to accurately read, interpret pump‑specific technical manuals, component drawings, and sketches; follow industry standards and customer specifications.
- Strong analytical problem‑solving skills, considering multiple factors and trade‑offs.
Job Duties
- Disassemble, troubleshoot, and reassemble various motor‑driven pumps and blowers.
- Clean and prepare mechanical/electrical components for inspection with shop equipment (sandblasters, cabinet blasters, dip tanks, steam wash pits, bake ovens).
- Examine parts for defects (eccentricities, rubs, wear, damage).
- Perform detailed mechanical and visual inspections, documenting all ‘As‑Found’ data on applicable forms.
- Recommend disposition on company job cards and customer spec sheets.
- Respond to emergency breakdown service calls when required.
- Safely oversee lifting and rigging of equipment up to 25 tons.
- Mentor less‑experienced mechanics throughout each repair phase.
- Balance rotating assemblies to an industry standard of 4 W/N using shop balancing equipment.
- Conduct hydrostatic pressure testing on refurbished pumps before shipment.
- Perform criteria acceptance testing on close‑coupled motor, submersible motor, etc.
- Provide own tools and basic measuring equipment; company supplies large or specialty tooling and electrical testing equipment.
- Maintain excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate flexibility for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required (24 / 7/365 service). The position may require working outside of assigned shift.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand, stoop, or kneel for extended periods.
- Good communicator with a positive attitude; follow written and verbal instructions.
