Summary The Clinical Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the overall coordination of activities of Nursing Services during off-tour and weekend shifts. This position channels situations to the appropriate Department Head as needed and collaborates with the Directors, Nurse Managers, and Charge Nurses to establish and enforce criteria to maintain a high level of patient care through appropriate interpretation of Hospital and Nursing policies and procedures, demonstration of effective communication skills, application of appropriate management principles, and maintenance of clinical assessment skills.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
- Consult with and advise/inform Administration, Manager Nursing Resources, Nurse Managers, and/or Department Managers concerning administrative and clinical issues, needs, and problems
- Represent Hospital Administration and carry out administrative responsibilities as assigned and directed
- Support overall activities of Nursing Services
- Serve as a resource to other hospital departments
- Keep Administration informed, as required, when an emergency situation arises
- Make arrangements for emergency surgeries and other on‑call services
- Coordinate the implementation of the disaster plan in the event of an actual or drill disaster during the working shift
- Demonstrate current knowledge of Hospital and Nursing Services goals, mission, and policies
- Maintain effective communication with all departments
- Make independent decisions when there is no established policy or regulation to meet the situation or circumstance
- Utilize appropriate resources when making decisions when there is no established policy or procedure to meet the situation or circumstance
- Assist with problem solving in ancillary departments as the need arises
- Promote cooperation of the staff to achieve department objectives and maintain good departmental relations
- Hold subordinates accountable for conformity to the hospital goals, mission, and policies for promoting a positive work and customer environment
- Assess employee problems during the shift and take appropriate action
- Support the nursing program
- Direct and supervise nursing staff in patient care to maintain high standards of performance
- Receive and review shift reports and Charge Nurse reports
- Make at least one (preferably two) complete rounds on all units, including the Emergency Department and Admissions
- Assess critical patients on request and/or as needed and document appropriately
- Perform duties of a staff nurse as the need arises
- Assess patient and family needs in stressful situations or times of crisis
- Maintain patients’ rights and serve as a patient advocate as needed
- Ensure allocation of material resources from ancillary departments as needed
- Remain visible to nursing staff and serve as a role model
- Respond to all codes
- Assess and adjust staffing as the need arises to ensure quality patient care
- Receive census reports from each unit
- Utilize the staffing matrix, unit activity, staffing mix, and census in determining staffing adjustments
- Monitor agency (if applicable), flexi‑pool, and overtime usage within the assigned shift
- Oversee admissions to all units
- Request replacement personnel when necessary
- Communicate staffing adjustments to the Charge Nurse effectively and in a timely manner
- Interpret policies and procedures, standards of performance, productivity, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards to nursing staff, medical staff, and patients as needed
- Remain aware of standards and policies and review new or revised policies on a regular basis
- Identify actual or potential problem areas with patients, families, medical staff, and employees and use effective management skills for resolution as needed
- Take an active part in clinical monitoring when requested
- Identify in‑service needs for nursing staff and communicate them to the Nurse Manager, Director, or appropriate CNE
