Assistant Buyer

Job Overview

As an FD Assistant Buyer at Family Dollar’s corporate office, you will collaborate with Buyers to support primary merchandise categories, ensuring company sales and profitability objectives are met. The role assists with planning, purchasing, controlling, and merchandising of assigned categories to maximize the effectiveness of the buying unit and achieve sales, profit, and market share goals.

• Develop competitive customer and market strategies, including targeted merchandise selection, proper assortment, and accurate pricing plans.
• Create or select ads and endcaps for stores, proofreading ads and coupons prior to review to ensure accuracy.
• Assist Buyers with fashion, seasonal, and other applicable programs to maximize sales.
• Create Micro Strategy and other reports as requested by Buyers.
• Analyze categories regularly to identify opportunities, trends, and sales shortfalls; review findings with Buyers and design targeted action plans.
• Actively participate in approval processes for assortment planning and in pre‑ and post‑line review processes, including generating reports, performing data analysis, creating planograms, working with replenishment, and following up on vendor responsibilities.
• Obtain samples and provide direction during advertising promotions.
• Perform quality control to ensure correct information for ads and signage.
• Assist Buyers with maintaining and tracking funding, such as quarterly damage billings, co‑op, special billings, and vendor billings.
• Reconcile monthly co‑op against advertising reports and maintain yearly vendor co‑op reports.
• Ensure merchandise quality standards are maintained according to Buyer specifications and FDS standards; identify and resolve quality issues.
• Maintain collaborative vendor partnerships, negotiate where applicable, and resolve vendor issues promptly.
• Develop strong internal relationships with Replenishment, Planning, Allocation, and other departments to ensure departmental goals are understood and executed.
• Design and implement an ongoing action‑learning program to gain proficiency in responsibilities such as negotiating, line reviews, demographic analysis, etc.
• Continuously build industry and product knowledge through monthly industry reports and system knowledge.
• Shop local Family Dollar stores and competitive retail stores to identify new trends, evaluate merchandise mix, evaluate competition, and translate findings into actionable product plans.
• Travel for work‑related duties as needed (approximately 5-10% of the time).
• Other job‑related duties as assigned.

• One (1) or more years of retail, buying, purchasing, replenishment, or similar experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows‑based programs, and retail math.
• Merchandising, product, trend, and analytical skills beneficial.

• Bachelor’s Degree from a four‑year college or university or an associate degree with additional experience or training.

$55,500-$61,000 annually.
