The selected Marine Welder candidate will support the PM Ventilation Modernization Team, working closely with skilled trades teams on active class surface ship modifications and installations for fleet modernization. The role will require regular travel to shipyards and military bases in the Hampton Roads area and potentially across the country and abroad. Weekend and overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards.

- Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
- Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
- Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non‑routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts.
- Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
- Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify structural and ventilation elements and equipment.
- Lay out and mark points and lines on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
- Cut, fit, assemble, and position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
- Apply comprehensive understanding of appropriate welding processes (SMAW Steel and GTAW Aluminum) and production to join, surface, fabricate, and repair parts of metal, sheet metal, and other weld‑able materials toward completion of assignments.
- Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
- Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
- Provide guidance and work leadership to less‑experienced tradespersons.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
- Participate in special projects as required.
- High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
- Ability to obtain medical clearance to wear a half‑face respirator.
- Experience with stick welding (SMAW) in all positions from 2G to 6G for Carbon and Stainless Steel.
- Experience with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) in all positions from 2G to 6G for Aluminum sheet metal and steel structural welding.
- Working knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts or work orders and written and verbal instructions for fabrication and installation.
- Accurate reading of welding symbols.
- Accurate reading of measuring devices to 1/16 inch.
- Knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.
- Adherence to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and host facilities.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
- Travel capability of 25 % to 50 % when not assigned to local tasking.
- Provision of hand tools and trade‑specific PPE per trade designation.
- Experience performing welding and structural work aboard naval vessels.
- Current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL‑STD‑248.
- Shipfitting or sheet metal working experience.
- Graduation from or completion of a vocational school, apprenticeship program or skilled trades certificate program.
- Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate.
Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs). Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to…
