Traffic Signal Technician I
The City of Chesapeake is seeking an energetic and dedicated team player for the entry‑level Traffic Signal Technician I position. The role involves installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of the City’s 204 traffic signals, emergency signals, and 34 school zone flashers. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, industrial electrical experience, ability to work at heights and in inclement weather, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a CDL license and fall protection certification within one year of hire.
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification is preferred.
- Assist Traffic Signal Technician II's in fabrication, erection, installation, repair, and operation of traffic signals and ITS equipment.
- Maintain city‑owned street lighting and respond to underground traffic signal utility location requests.
- Assist contractors when directed to discuss equipment installation and repairs.
- Maintain records for assigned area, process daily paperwork including reports, requisitions, and personnel information, and investigate citizen inquiries.
- Keep abreast of new technology and advancements in the traffic signal field and make recommendations for changes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in electronics or a closely related field.
- Minimum six months of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
- Valid driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) and fall protection certification required at time of hire; CDL must be obtained within one year.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I certification preferred.
- Experience with vehicle detection and communication systems related to signal operations.
- Ability to learn and understand new technologies.
Full‑time position, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday‑Friday; potential overtime and work in emergencies. Commute to Chesapeake, VA.
