Job Summary
Hampton Roads Transit is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to work independently or as part of a crew to perform a wide range of maintenance, repair and preventive tasks. The role supports safe, compliant operation of all facilities, equipment and mechanical systems. This position carries a salary of $44,000 plus a $3,000 service bonus.
Key Responsibilities- Perform skilled and unskilled tasks with minimal supervision.
- Troubleshoot and repair all facilities electrical, HVAC, plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Maintain assets in compliance with safety practices, federal, state, local codes and regulations.
- Use hand and power tools, drill presses and saws to conduct maintenance and repair work.
- Ensure equipment and tools are maintained, stored, clean, secure and in working condition.
- Safeguard buildings to be clean, orderly and compliant with health and fire regulations.
- Assist with setting up meetings, special events and storm preparations/cleanup (snow removal, downed trees, trash).
- Inspect properties, equipment and chemical storage for environmental compliance.
- Carry out minor repairs to interior and exterior building components (walls, floors, lights, roofs, garages, landscaping, sidewalks, fences, pavement markings).
- Execute minor renovation tasks including door installation, framing, drywall installation/finishing and painting.
- Install, relocate or remove equipment, office furniture and related items as directed.
- Participate in formal and on‑the‑job training programs.
- Manage records in accordance with the HRT Records Management Policy and Procedures.
- Work outside regular business hours as required and comply with HRT safety and environmental policies.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and painting.
- Ability to troubleshoot, prioritize and resolve maintenance issues independently.
- Effective verbal and written communication with internal and external customers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, HRT’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.
- Strong problem‑solving skills for software applications related to job duties.
- Commitment to safety awareness and reporting of hazardous conditions.
- High school diploma or GED required; basic mechanical skills and understanding of tools.
- Certificate from trade school or equivalent work experience in facilities maintenance preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of Facilities Maintenance Mechanic experience or equivalent.
- Clear written and oral communication skills; basic math competency.
- Valid driver’s license required; obtain a Virginia driver’s license within 60 days if holding an out‑of‑state license.
- Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC and/or Mechanical certifications preferred.
- Position classified as essential personnel.
- May lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing ladders and walking.
- Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle.
- On‑call and seasonal overtime may be required.
