Sheet Metal Mechanic – Platform Modernization

The selected Sheet Metal Mechanic will support the Platform Modernization (PM) trade teams, working closely with our skilled trades teams to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment on active‑class surface ships. Work may be required on shipyards and military bases around the Hampton Roads area, and travel to shipyards and bases across the country and abroad may be necessary.

  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.
  • Support trades team by working on active‑class vessels to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non‑routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
  • Cut, fit, assemble, bend, and position sheet metal, ductwork, ventilation and support structures to be attached or welded into jigs, holding fixtures and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
  • Apply understanding of production and processes, specialty trades functions and tools to provide technical support, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
  • Participate in special projects as required.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and trip reports.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school education or trade school equivalent, with at least 2 years of related experience. Technical/professional certifications preferred.
  • Ability to obtain medical clearance to wear a half‑face respirator.
  • Experience performing mechanical work.
  • Ability to read and accurate use of standard measuring instruments.
  • Knowledge of removing, attaching, assembling and modifying naval shipboard ventilation, ducting, sheet metal and related systems.
  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders, and verbal instruction for fabrication and/or installation.
  • Willingness to work outside trade‑specific requirements as team projects require, assisting team members toward task completion.
  • Compliance with verbal instruction, safety procedures, quality control steps and procedures.
  • Experience working in a team environment and ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and keep clearance level throughout employment.
  • Ability to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials during employment.
  • Travel capability between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasks.
  • Provide hand tools and trade‑specific PPE as required by trade designation.
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience performing mechanical or ventilation work aboard naval vessels.
  • Ventilation, HVAC or ductwork experience.
  • Graduation from or completion of a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program.
  • Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification.
  • Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate.
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lb). Must be able to work on and climb ladders, operate in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and confined spaces. Ability to perform other duties that may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels, riding ships at sea for extended periods and wearing a respirator.

Travel within and outside the continental United States may be required.
