Equipment Operator I – Water Services
The City of Chesapeake Public Utilities – Water Services team is seeking a motivated, hands‑on individual to join as an Equipment Operator I. This role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining water service lines while working outdoors and supporting essential public infrastructure.

Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (overtime and emergency work may be required)
Hours:
40+ per week
Pay Grade: GE05
Salary: $40,531 - $60,290 annually (starting salary depends on qualifications and experience)
- Install new water services, including tapping water mains and boring under roadways
- Repair, upgrade, and abandon existing water service lines
- Replace and upgrade water meter boxes
- Restore work sites, including soil, asphalt, and concrete surfaces
- Perform general construction, maintenance, and manual labor assignments
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent vocational training (10th grade completion required)
- Minimum 3 months of full‑time equivalent experience related to water service line work
- Valid driver’s license with a driving record that complies with City Driving Standards
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) desired or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Ability to work in confined spaces and respond to overtime or emergency situations
- Basic knowledge of pipe repair techniques and maintenance of water service lines
- $3,000 sign‑on bonus upon hire
- $4,000 annual CDL stipend (if applicable)

Employees are subject to pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol testing, including for marijuana. A valid medical marijuana certification will not be considered a positive result unless the position requires a CDL or is a sworn law‑enforcement role.
