Bridge Maintenance Mechanic

Work for Virginia’s second largest municipality supporting 123 movable and fixed bridges and culverts. This full‑time position operates in a small, collaborative team with focus on problem‑solving and customer support.

Responsibilities
  • Learn in‑depth operation and maintenance of movable bridges, including greasing and lubricating mechanical moving parts.
  • Perform structural and non‑structural concrete removal, preparation, formwork, and placement.
  • Assist in the repair and preservation of structural steel, including surface preparation and painting.
  • Perform general rough carpentry work to repair and maintain bridge fender systems and wooden bridge decks.
  • Assist in rigging operations for material and parts handling.
  • Assist in installation, maintenance and repair of guardrail and traffic safety devices.
  • Set up work zones to ensure a safe working environment and provide traffic control, including flagging.
  • Perform general manual labor and grounds maintenance around bridges and culverts (mowing, weed control, spraying, tree trimming).
  • Load and operate various maintenance and construction equipment and attachments such as grease guns, painting equipment, hand pumps, pavement breakers, gunite or shotcrete machines, power tools, welding equipment, sandblasting equipment, bucket trucks, pontoon boats with outboard mowers, boom and zero‑turn mowers, bobcats, crash cushion trucks, crack‑sealing machines, forklifts, snowplows and dump trucks.
  • Respond to emergent situations such as bridge mechanical breakdowns, hurricane road clearing, and snow/ice control.
  • Participate in training and skills development in maintenance methods, construction methods, and equipment operation toward career progression and personal advancement.
  • Work in environments 0–200 ft. above the water or road surface, tight confined spaces, and from a boat.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and one year of comparable college education.
  • Minimum of one month of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.
  • Class B CDL required within six months of employment; the City provides in‑house CDL training at no cost.
  • Subject to pre‑employment drug testing – including testing for marijuana; a medical marijuana card does not exempt applicants unless the role requires a commercial driver’s license.
