Position Summary
The Underground Groundman is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This position works at various locations and may be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.
Essential Functions- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energised underground work.
- Setting pad mount transformers.
- Frequently work around energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labour.
- Understand proper use of company radio.
- Understand basic rigging, hand lines and lineman knot tying.
- Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Capable of receiving and following directions.
- Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Must be familiar with induced voltage.
- Assist with the installation and hook‑up of a single‑phase transformer.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand basic concepts of equipment set‑up and grounding.
- Work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
- Understands minimum approach distance.
- Understands excavation and shoring requirements.
- Check voltage on transformers.
- Install and remove a service.
- Properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Understand when to wear personal protective equipment.
- Climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools.
- Work in underground trenches and manholes.
- Use Kellum grips appropriately.
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Work live high‑voltage distribution lines.
- Perform other related work as required to complete the job.
Minimum Requirements:
- No experience necessary.
- Read, write and communicate effectively.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- Travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Work for extended periods in various locations when required.
- Lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Work overtime when requested.
- Work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel; and reach with hands and arms.
WorkEnvironment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
