Position Description
Ryder is hiring a Diesel Technician Trainee in Chesapeake, Virginia. The role provides weekly pay and paid training to become a Ryder Diesel Mechanic Technician.
Compensation & Schedule- Hourly Pay: $21.00 per hour
- Schedule:
Monday–Friday, Weekends OFF - Hours:
3:00 pm – 11:30 pm (Second Shift)
- No experience needed; on‑job paid training

- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Zero to one year mechanical experience with diesel engines (preferred)
- 18 years of age or older
- Proficiency in written and verbal English communication
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn equipment (preferred)
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems (preferred)
- Work independently and as a team member
- Professional representation of Ryder and engagement with employees and customers
- Time‑management and priority‑setting skills
- Track record of performance and good attendance
- Personal accountability and proven results
- Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office competency
- Beginner knowledge of machines, tools, and shop management systems (preferred)
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A (preferred)
- DOT safety regulated and safety‑sensitive position; age/work‑hour requirements per state law
- Obtain CDL within 6 months after hire
- Pass Ryder drug test
- Pass DOT physical
- Pass Ryder road test
- Pass Ryder background and motor‑vehicle check (including drug/alcohol verification of prior employments for the last 3 years)
- Move heavy‑duty vehicles into/out of yard, wash bay, service shop, or rental shop; wash and detail vehicles manually or with automated equipment.
- Fuel diesel, natural gas, and hybrid vehicles per shop safety policies; record fuel activity and maintain fuel/DEF inventories.
- Perform multi‑point inspections on inbound units, checking tire pressure, fluid levels, lights, welding, tire changes, refrigeration units, and reporting issues.
- Maintain fuel island area to Six Sigma standards; perform minor facility maintenance as assigned.
- Attend and complete Technician Training Development Program requirements and assessments, including Service Island, Technician I and II training modules.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
