Are you looking for a hands on career where your work makes a visible impact on your community every day? The City of Chesapeake’s Public Works Traffic Operations Division is seeking a motivated and dependable Traffic Signal Technician to join our team.
As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will help install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the City’s traffic signal infrastructure that keeps motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders moving safely throughout Chesapeake. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with industrial electrical experience who enjoys working outdoors, learning new technologies, and being part of a team that provides critical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Traffic Operations team maintains more than 200 traffic signals, emergency signal systems at Fire Stations, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and school zone flashers across the City. As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will work alongside experienced technicians while developing the skills needed to build a rewarding career in traffic signal operations and intelligent transportation systems ( ITS ).

Typical tasks include but are not limited to:
- Assist Traffic Signal Technician II’s in the fabrication, erection, installation, repair and operation of the City’s traffic signals, related control devices and other ITS equipment.
- Maintains city owned street lighting and provides responses to underground traffic signal utilities location requests.
- Assists in meeting with various contractors when directed to discuss equipment installation and repairs.
- Maintains record system for assigned area, processes daily paperwork including reports, requisitions and personnel information, and investigates citizen inquiries.
- Stays abreast of new technology and advancement in the traffic signal field and makes recommendations for changes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
