HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions on US Naval Vessel alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The Assistant Welder/Fitter will primarily support PM operations at the Woodlake Fabrication Shop in Chesapeake, VA, with possible periodic local travel to shipyards and military bases. Limited out‑of‑town travel, up to 25%, may be required based on contract needs and trade skill requirements.
Occasional weekend or evening work may be necessary to meet high‑volume or short‐notice deadlines. This role is contingent upon being awarded the contract.
Job Responsibilities

- Gain valuable trades and life experience as you learn and focus your skills, through the direction of senior technical tradespersons in a variety of industrial fabrication duties, towards NAVSEA Welding Certification.
- Perform routine work technical trades duties, under direction, and in accordance with blueprints and technical manuals, to include support of technical repair, installation, maintenance and modification of structures and systems.
- Perform semi‑skilled and unskilled specific or general duties, such as supplying or holding materials and tools; cleaning working area, machines, equipment and diverse tasks as directed.
- Perform semi‑skilled and unskilled laboring duties supporting the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of a wide array of systems and equipment.
- Apply job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of tasks that vary based on job, contract, customer requirements, specifications, etc.
- High School education and 1 year of related experience, or Trade School or equivalent.
- Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half‑face respirator.
- Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
- Must have experience working in a team environment.
- Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
- Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII.
- Related technical Trade School or experience with structural fabrication, shipfitting, or welding.
- Experience comprehending blueprints or engineering sketches.
- Prior NAVSEA certified welding experience.
- Previous work related to technical trades.
- Candidates who hold a current or active DoD confidential clearance or higher.
