Summary

Join our Elevator Support Unit (ESU)! The position will support contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their systems on U.S. Navy ships. The selected candidate will perform a variety of skilled trades, maintenance, and technical tasks on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems, and associated equipment, including aircraft elevators, weapons elevators and vertical stores conveyors. Work includes daily physical labor in an industrial and shipboard environment.

Travel within and outside of the continental United States may be required. This is a full‑time position located in Chesapeake, VA.

What You Will Do
  • Provide welding support certified in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), and Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) on plate or pipe.
  • Use brazing and/or flame‑cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Ensure shop safety and housekeeping are followed.
  • Ensure all materials and equipment are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school education, trade school, or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Current or prior experience welding SMAW/Stick, GTAW/TIG, and GMAW/MIG.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DBIDS badge, security clearance, and must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow detailed oral and written instructions, schematics or drawings, technical documents, and conduct activities safely.
  • Must be able to calibrate, and make minor repairs on tools or equipment.
  • Ability to make decisions using sound judgment while complying with policies, procedures, applicable principles, and state and federal laws.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trade specialty.
  • Must demonstrate welding ability through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from the Quality Assurance Team within the first four weeks from start date for continued employment.
Bonus Points For
  • 6–8 years of experience as a production welder preferred.
  • Production welder experience while in the Navy or as a civilian supporting Navy ship repair or new construction.
  • Completion of a formal course of vocational or Navy welding training and certification.
  • A current, active DoD security clearance.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs). Able to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels, riding ships at sea for extended periods, wearing a respirator, and traveling within and outside of the continental United States.

Salary

The listed salary range for this role is $52,780.00 – $60,320.00, intended as a good faith estimate based on location, expectations, and responsibilities.
