Job Description
This opportunity is available to current City of Chesapeake employees only.
Public Works Operations is seeking an experienced General Supervisor to oversee crews performing the installation, maintenance, repair, and construction of City infrastructure. This position combines hands on fieldwork with leadership, planning, and administrative responsibilities to help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Operating heavy equipment and planning, coordinating, and leading crews engaged in asphalt and concrete work, pothole and roadway repairs, cave in response, ditch maintenance, and other construction and maintenance activities.
- Ensuring employees follow all applicable safety procedures and requirements.
- Serving as the after hours duty officer on a rotating basis.
- Performing supervisory duties, including training employees, assigning and evaluating work, managing and approving timecards, entering work order information, participating in staff selection, counseling employees, and administering discipline when appropriate.
- Planning and leading emergency operations during inclement weather, including snow removal, ice control, flood response, and hurricane response.
The ideal candidate will have experience supervising construction or maintenance crews and operating light to heavy motor equipment and related attachments. Candidates should be able to read grades from cut sheets and stations, lay out work zones, coordinate with Miss Utility, and apply knowledge of concrete and asphalt construction practices.
This position requires the ability to plan projects, identify resource needs, perform manual labor, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. The General Supervisor must also be able to maintain accurate work orders, logs, forms, records, material expenditures, equipment status, and other job related information. Experience using Kronos and Maximo is preferred.
