This safety-sensitive position requires a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and may include random testing. Marijuana testing is required; a valid medical marijuana certificate is not a waiver unless a CDL is required or the role is a sworn law enforcement officer.
Job SummaryAs a Juvenile Services Specialist at Chesapeake Juvenile Services, you will mentor, guide, and support youth to promote positive change within a structured, team-oriented environment. Responsibilities include supervising youth residents, providing individual and group counseling, managing crisis situations, and maintaining a safe environment.
Responsibilities- Supervise and engage youth residents using behavioral management strategies
- Provide individual and group counseling to support growth and accountability
- Maintain a safe, structured environment and respond confidently to crises
- Document daily activities, incidents, and case updates accurately
- Transport residents to court, appointments, and approved activities
- Plan and lead recreational and developmental programs
- Conduct room checks, searches, and nightly supervision routines
- Collaborate with staff, assisting medical personnel when needed
- Perform physical interventions when required to maintain safety
- High school diploma or equivalent; formal training or one year of college education in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field
- Minimum six months of related, full‑time equivalent experience; preferred experience with group counseling in a residential setting
- Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust while maintaining boundaries
- Sound judgment and composure in high‑pressure situations
- Team‑first mindset and commitment to youth development
- Knowledge of counseling techniques with at‑risk youth
- Valid driver’s license and compliant driving record per City Driving Standards in case of occasional driving duties
- Handle With Care, CPR, and First Aid certifications within 45 days of hire
- Experience with interviewing and fundamental principles of adolescent psychology
- Knowledge of laws and procedures related to juvenile detainees
- Ability to counsel and conduct sensitive interviews
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong computer proficiency
- Experience establishing effective relationships with city agencies, court personnel, and residents' guardians
$44,734 – $59,273 hourly, starting pay depends on qualifications and experience.

Work Schedule24‑hour facility; schedule may vary. Employees may be expected to work additional hours during emergencies or short‑term department needs.
