Volunteer Opportunity:
Chesapeake Juvenile Services

Chesapeake Juvenile Services is a professional organization dedicated to the positive development of youth. Volunteers help augment programming and provide new resources to residents.

Volunteer Responsibilities
  • Tutors for literacy, writing, and math
  • Facilitate social/vocational skill‑building curricula and activities
  • Lead arts and crafts sessions
  • Coordinate theatrical performances and production
  • Develop job and career readiness skills
  • Deliver motivational speaking
  • Conduct anti‑gang/bullying activities
Volunteer Requirements
  • Complete the volunteer application in the applicant tracking system.
  • Provide three personal or work references (not related to you).
  • Notify Chesapeake Juvenile Services when your application is complete.
  • Contact Peter Curney, Training Coordinator, at 382‑6135 or
  • After HR notification, call 757‑382‑6492 to arrange background checks.
  • Submit the following:
    Child Protective Services request for Central Registry search, release of information forms, and background investigation forms covering criminal history, FBI and State Police fingerprints, and the Sex Offender Registry.
  • Participate in an interview and/or present the services you intend to deliver to a panel of CJS staff; notify panel for audiovisual accommodations if needed.
On‑boarding
  • Tuberculosis test completed within 30 days of start date.
  • Four‑hour orientation covering resident rights, confidentiality, PREA obligations, organizational structure, facility tour, basic security, and emergency procedures.
  • Sign confidentiality agreement and related training documents.
Qualifications
  • No educational requirement.
  • Handle With Care, CPR, and First Aid certifications within 45 days.
  • Minimum six months of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
  • Acceptable background check required.
Other Important Information

Volunteers are not authorized to be alone with residents at any time; staff will be present at all times.

Physical & Work Demands
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
  • General duties without exposure to hazardous chemicals, electrical, or mechanical hazards.
