Equipment Operator I – Pump Stations

Location:

Chesapeake, VA

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (rotating on‑call required). Additional overtime or emergency duty may be required.

Salary: $40,531 – $60,290 per year (starting salary depends on qualifications and experience).

• Operate motorized equipment (tanker trucks, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, backhoes) to transport materials, tools and personnel to job sites.
• Use specialized equipment to support city operations and assist in the repair and maintenance of sanitary sewer gravity and force mains and service laterals.
• Perform operational tests and inspections to ensure facility systems and components run efficiently, including manholes and valves.
• Inspect and perform minor maintenance on motor equipment; report any issues to supervisor.

• Proficiency with heavy machinery and hand/power tools, with ability to keep equipment functioning smoothly.
• Team-oriented and able to respond to emergency situations, inclement weather and overtime demands.
• Ability to obtain a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.

• Education:
  
  completion of 10th grade; high school diploma, GED or vocational training preferred.
• Experience:
  
  minimum three months of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
• Certificates & Licenses: valid driver’s license compliant with City Driving Standards;
  Commercial Driver’s License required or obtainable within six months.
• Special:
  May require confined‑space exposure; work may exceed scheduled hours during emergencies; emergency operations may be performed outside normal job duties.

Position is safety‑sensitive. Applicants are subject to pre‑employment drug/alcohol testing and may be subject to random testing. Testing includes marijuana; a valid medical marijuana card is not an exemption unless the position requires a CDL or is a sworn law‑enforcement role.
