- Operate a variety of motorized equipment, including tanker trucks, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, and backhoes, to transport materials, tools, and personnel to job sites.
- Use specialized equipment to support essential City operations and assist in the repair and maintenance of sanitary sewer gravity and force mains and service laterals.
- Perform operational tests and inspections to ensure facility systems and components are running efficiently, including manholes and valves.
- Inspect and perform minor maintenance on motor equipment, reporting any issues to your supervisor.
- A skilled Equipment Operator who knows how to use heavy machinery and hand/power tools to keep things running smoothly.
- A team player with the ability to respond to emergency situations, including inclement weather and overtime requirements.
- Someone with the ability to obtain a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire and who’s ready to put your experience to work for the City of Chesapeake.

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTRequires completion of 10th grade in high school. High school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training is preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSIn addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSESRequires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Depending upon department requirements, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire, is also required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred QualificationsExperience operating heavy equipment to perform maintenance of sanitary sewer systems, construction or related field.
