RoleThe State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 seeks an enthusiastic State School Teacher to teach a foreign language. Candidates must hold a current Connecticut teaching endorsement for one of the following languages:
- French, 7-12 (018)
- German, 7-12 (019)
- Italian, 7-12 (020)
- Latin, 7-12 (021)
- Mandarin Chinese, 7-12 (318)
- Portuguese, 7-12 (317)
- Russian, 7-12 (022)
- Spanish, 7-12 (023)
- Other World Language, 7-12 (024)
- World Language Instructor – Elementary (101)
- Schedule: First‑shift, full time (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday.
- Academic Calendar: Unified School District #1 follows a 12‑month school calendar with 222 school days per year.
- Training: Selected candidates may present a lesson plan during the interview and must attend a 14‑week training at the CT DOC Training Academy.
- Location: Manson Youth Institution – Cheshire, CT
Candidates will start at the appropriate step based on their highest degree. Salary is based on the P‑3B T1‑T4 35‑hour pay plan:
- Bachelor’s Degree:
Step 1 $ 68,792 – Step 11–14 $ 104,174 - Master’s Degree:
Step 1 $ 72,241 – Step 11–14 $ 122,335 - 6th‑Year Degree:
Step 1 $ 77,294 – Step 11–14 $ 130,898

The Connecticut Department of Correction operates 13 correctional facilities and oversees supervision for sentenced, unsentenced, parole, and community release offenders. All programming is designed to support re‑entry and public safety.

Your Role & Responsibilities- Prioritize safety and security for staff, students, and the public.
- Teach early intervention, elementary, secondary, and special subject curricula.
- Develop individualized education plans and group lessons.
- Set short‑ and long‑term goals and evaluate student progress.
- Participate in planning team meetings and case review conferences.
- Hold conferences with parents or other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with ancillary educational professionals.
- Maintain student records and write reports.
- Model positive teaching practices and maintain classroom discipline.
- Understanding of diverse learning styles and ability to teach across ability levels.
- Proficiency with various disciplinary approaches.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to follow an administrative schedule that may change unexpectedly.
- Possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate for the assigned language.
- Preferred:
Prior teaching experience in a correctional setting or with diverse groups.
- Foreign language teaching experience.
- Experience working in a correctional institution.
- Experience teaching groups with varied educational levels.
- Current endorsement in one of the listed foreign languages.
- Complete a 14‑week hazardous‑duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development.
- May require a Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
