Math Department Chair (Grade 9-12)
The duties of the department chair are critical to the overall educational program and require effective and ongoing communication and collaboration with staff and administration. As an instructional leader, the department head remains current with educational literature, practices, issues, facilitates critical communication with department members, enhances articulation regarding curriculum alignment with standards, facilitates the development and use of common assessments in order to determine instructional strategies that will most effectively meet the needs of students.
Works with the administration, department and school leadership team to assist in creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Facilitates accomplishment of District, school, and department goals. The department chair will demonstrate a willingness to examine student data and facilitate changes necessary to produce efficient and effective practices that will increase student achievement, by:
- coordinating and revising the curriculum that is being taught in the classroom by the department members;
- supporting the District's K-12 Math program philosophy, facilitating in the development of measurable and meaningful goals within the department that support school wide goals;
- facilitating department discussions on student performance data for the purpose of curricular or instructional modification;
- representing the department's needs for professional development and sharing information regarding professional development.
planning and facilitating professional development for the department Identifying resources and supports to aid in the fulfillment of goals Collaborate with the elementary and middle school teacher leaders to engage in and prepare for the 5 year Cheshire Curriculum Council review which evaluates and analyzes the K-12 Math program, plans and implements the department's five year goals. Promote district initiatives with implementation of the most current standards and skills, formative and summative assessments, common assessments for courses, and effective instructional practices.
Facilitate department meetings/PLC meetings to support high quality instruction. Plan and organize department meetings and submit agendas, attendance and minutes as directed by the administration. Facilitates the development and implementation of curriculum for his/her department, instructional techniques aligned to HQI, materials, curriculum and assessment. Gather information and coordinate efforts to inventory departmental materials and resources. Facilitate department committees for new text adoptions, and recommend supplementary materials for his/her department in collaboration with the curriculum office.
Attend regularly scheduled Instructional Leadership Team meetings. Update administration regarding practices and expectations, classroom methodologies, instructional techniques, materials, curriculum, and assessment. Disseminate information from Instructional Leadership meetings to teachers. Engage in articulation efforts between middle and high school Math teachers to coordinate the curriculum throughout the district. Submits any department budget requests. Facilitates the department discussions regarding the allocation of resources when assigned to the department.
Manages the departmental budget and resources. Collaborate on behalf of the department with administration and counseling regarding master schedule, course descriptions, articulation, and student placement in the various department courses. Coordinates the department's schedule of course offerings. Facilitate the attendance of Math teachers to attend conferences that would be beneficial for a department member to attend. Assist short-term substitute teachers in carrying out their assigned duties and communicate any concerns to administration.
Support the principal(s) with interviewing and hiring new staff, and/or long-term substitutes Promote efforts to support the success of student teachers/interns or apprentices placed within the department.
Qualifications
Required:
Connecticut Teaching Certificates #029 (Mathematics 7-12) AND #105 (Department Chairperson) Preferred but not required: #092 (Administration and Supervision) (The #092 supersedes the #105 endorsement.) Salary:
In accordance with the Agreement Between Cheshire Board of Education and the Education Association of Cheshire. Benefit:
Children of a teacher who does not reside in Cheshire may attend the Cheshire Public Schools so long as the teacher continues to teach in Cheshire and pays 50% of the published regular education tuition cost, plus any additional costs incurred by the District regarding their child.
