The Heavy Equipment Operator performs a variety of specialized functions in infrastructure maintenance and repairs. This position maintains rights-of-ways; cleans and installs new and existing drainage ditches, culverts, and storm drains; repairs roadways, water lines, and sewers; and performs manual labor including masonry, installing decorative lights, setting up for special events, removing yard waste, and repairing pot holes.
Essential FunctionsMows and weeds City grounds including rights-of-way, lawns, and areas on or near City grounds, roads, City signs, ditches, sidewalks using mowers, weed eaters, and blowers.
Removes tree limbs using sidearm cutter, cuts trees and limbs using chainsaw, and operates chipper truck to grind tree limbs.
Drives flatbed dump trucks and small dump trucks for hauling materials to and from job sites; drives bucket trucks and heavy equipment such as bulldozers and loaders; and runs loader to load and unload truck and to backfill and remove dirt from job site.
Serves as traffic control flagger to keep traffic flowing, places road work signs for safety, and serves as pole man for surveying.
Operates sanitation truck with side arms for garbage pick up, picks up yard waste such as leaves and limbs, picks up appliances and furniture for paid pick-up, and operates clamp truck and or leaf truck.
Operates backhoe for pot hole repairs, repairs pot holes by filling with asphalt, and assists with manhole repairs.
Installs and repairs sewer lines, lift stations, water taps, meters, BFPs, force mains, gravity flow lines, and services.
Repairs water lines, water main lines, services, and fire hydrants. Locates telephones, water, and power lines prior to performing repairs to avoid damage.
Reads water meters and terminates services, as needed.
Maintains treatment plant grounds and cleans sludge drying beds using pitchforks, rakes, shovels, front-end loaders, and dump trucks.
Mows hayfields and weeds around header pipes, cleans effluent troughs and boxes on fields, and operates tractors, balers, mowers, and fluffers.
Repairs concrete driveways, sidewalks, and storm drains.
Pours forms, places forms, and finishes cement.
Sets up and operates laser transit for ditches, manholes, and pipes.
Ensures proper grade, rakes ditches, and grades and levels out roads and ditches with motor grader.
Lays brick or block for drain boxes, valve boxes, or drying beds.
Inspects and maintains fuels trucks and equipment, washes trucks and equipment, and lubricates equipment.
Installs decorative lights for special events and sets up stages for special events.
Perform related duties as assigned.
