Instructional Assistant

The primary responsibility for the Instructional Assistant is direct involvement with students with unique needs in the school setting. Job duties range from supporting students in the classroom and throughout the school building to assisting with functional and self management skills. This position will deal with parents, students and staff on a regular basis and will be expected to interact with others in a professional, friendly, and organized manner.

Starting salary is $17/hr.

Minimum qualifications include meeting all Indiana requirements as a highly qualified Instructional Assistant, two years of college or the equivalent, and teaching license and/or educational training and experience preferred.

Principal responsibilities and duties include providing instruction assistance to students, working with individual students or small groups, assisting in the implementation of Individual Education Plans, providing supervision and support for individual students, working with other professionals, assisting classroom teachers with documenting and maintaining student records, supporting students with functional skills needs or behavioral concerns, utilizing de-escalation strategies, being a part of the crisis team, performing health related student needs, supporting escorting throughout the building and to and from the bus, assisting in classroom management, assisting with the administration and scoring of student assessments, assisting with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment, functioning as an appropriate role model for children, responding to emergency situations, keeping teachers and/or specialists informed of special needs or problems of individual students, and completing other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the director, building administrator or administrator designee.

Knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics include demonstrating interpersonal skills, working cooperatively with teachers, students, and staff, ability to learn new skills quickly, ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, ability to work independently and in a team environment, ability to multi-task with attention to detail, ability to learn classroom procedures and expectations and apply them on a consistent basis, demonstrating organizational and time management skills, and performing all other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Special requirements include maintaining a working knowledge of all classroom equipment, a basic knowledge of operations for computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers, working an average of 5.75 hours or less per day, no more than 180 days per year, being regularly required to talk or hear, standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reaching with hands and arms, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds, specific vision abilities required by this job, and being capable of physically assisting students with disabilities as required in some possible assignments.
