SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The primary responsibility for the Instructional Assistant is direct involvement with students with unique needs in the school setting. Job duties include supporting students in the classroom and throughout the school building, assisting with functional and self‑management skills, and interacting professionally, friendly, and organized with parents, students, and staff.

Starting Salary: $17/hr

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet all Indiana requirements as a highly qualified Instructional Assistant.
  • Two years of college or the equivalent are required.
  • Teaching license and/or educational training and experience preferred.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide instruction assistance to students under the direction and guidance of a teacher and/or facilitator.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to practice and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans and monitor student progress.
  • Provide supervision and support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable full participation.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as speech therapists, social workers, counselors, occupational and physical therapists.
  • Assist classroom teachers with documenting and maintaining student records, including data collection methods.
  • Support students with functional skill needs or behavioral concerns and help develop appropriate social skills.
  • Utilize de‑escalation strategies to prevent behaviors that could be harmful to self or others.
  • Serve on the crisis team for the classroom and building to support appropriate Crisis Prevention Intervention; CPI.
  • Perform health‑related student needs as trained by the building nurse.
  • Perform utility needs associated with students' bathroom usage, clothing changes, or other physical well‑being needs.
  • Support escorting throughout the building and to and from the bus as necessary.
  • Assist in classroom management.
  • Assist with administration and scoring of student assessments.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve student safety concerns and report those concerns to the direct supervisor.
  • Keep teachers and/or specialists informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Complete other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the director, building administrator, or administrator designee.
  • On occasion, may be asked to work outside of typically scheduled days or hours.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment is moderate in noise, protected from outside weather but not temperature changes. No specific environmental hazards are indicated.

    Equipment:
    Maintain a working knowledge of classroom equipment, including computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines, and copiers.

    Hours:

    Typically expected to work an average of 5.75 hours or less per day, no more than 180 days per year. Hours may be adjusted by the direct supervisor.

    Physical Demands:
    Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle objects, reach, lift up to 25 pounds, and perform vision tasks. Must be capable of physically assisting students with disabilities as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.).
