Duneland School Corporation Substitute Bus Aide

A Duneland School Corporation substitute bus aide is required to assist in the transportation of all special students needing additional attention. This must be done in a safe and lawful manner. This position has a highly responsible role in transporting and dealing with students, parents and staff on a regular basis. Bus aides interact with individuals both inside and outside of the corporation and therefore, must have the ability to present a professional and organized image at all times.

Minimum qualifications include being at least twenty-one (21) years of age; complete and maintain a valid Physical Fitness Certificate; have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); and have one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Principal responsibilities and duties include:

• Assisting students requiring help to load or unload the bus
• Securing special needs students and/or equipment with restraints, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, car seats etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students
• Storing and securing all student equipment that is to be transported
• Constantly monitoring student's wellbeing and behavior during the route
• Preparing documentation (e.g. incident reports, student misconduct) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information
• Responding appropriately to student's needs during the route and notifying the driver if an emergency exists
• Providing First Aid only as trained and required by the situation
• Sitting where needed on the bus and remaining seated while bus is in motion
• Observing safety and security procedures
• Using and maintaining equipment and materials properly
• Assisting the driver in keeping the bus clean and sanitary
• Assisting in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including wheelchair lifts
• Being familiar with the route in order to assist a substitute or new driver
• Attending all in-service training
• Conducting emergency evacuation from bus, including exiting from the emergency door and may also require removal of disabled student from bus
• Cooperating and communicating with school personnel, parents and students in an efficient and friendly manner
• Accepting all delegated authority
• Exhibiting appropriate role modeling through language, dress and hygiene
• Performing all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Special requirements include:

Work Environment:
This position typically works in a school bus setting with a controlled temperature environment. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions will occur.

Equipment:
School Bus Aides are required to maintain a working knowledge of all transportation vehicles and equipment used to aid in the loading and unloading of students. A basic knowledge of operating computers, printers, telephone systems, and copiers is also required.

Hours:

This position typically works an average of 4 to 6 hours per school day. Summer hours will be adjusted as authorized by the Superintendent to assure adequate coverage throughout the summer school period. Evening or weekend activities may be scheduled as necessary. Occasional travel to other states and communities may be required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or carry from 40-60 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, or move up to 100 pounds.
