The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 2 (Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's, and Talbot County) is recruiting for a Work Zone Traffic Control Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician IV). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. All eligible candidates must meet the minimum and selective qualifications by the closing date. Nature of Work

The main purpose of the Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Inspector is to assist the District 2 Traffic Engineering team to protect workers and the public by ensuring work zone traffic control is implemented safely and correctly in accordance with state and national standards through physical inspection of the work zone traffic control setups and initiating timely corrective action as necessary.

This position will conduct regular daytime and nighttime field inspections of work zone setups in all phases to assess their compliance with SHA standards and guidelines. Also, this position will document inspection findings daily using SHA's online Temporary Traffic Control Inspection Rating System.

The WZTC Inspector will help Project Engineers or Traffic Managers in determining the best work zone set-ups for standalone projects or overlapping projects where setups may need to be combined. The incumbent will represent District 2 Traffic at various construction meetings and convey work zone safety expectations to the contractor. This position will monitor the Lane Closure Permits System, review and approve/reject/modify permit applications as necessary, and enter permit applications for entities with no access to the program.

The WZTC Inspector will assist the District 2 Traffic Engineering Team when there is little to no construction activity due to weather or holiday work restrictions. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education
:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience
:
Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective

Qualification:

One (1) year of the required experience must have involved road/highway construction, construction inspection, utility inspection, maintenance inspection and/or work zone inspection.

Notes:
Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college are considered to have met two years of the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland with no more than four (4) points. The selected candidate must possess/obtain the Traffic Manager Certification and the Registered Flagger Certification within the probationary period.
