Location: Chevy Chase, MD — Hybrid, three days per week on-site

Assignment Type: Permanent Hire

Compensation: $170,000–$230,000 annually

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for payroll across a large, multi-state employee population.
  • Lead payroll transformation initiatives involving people, processes, systems, controls, and reporting.
  • Evaluate current payroll workflows and identify inefficiencies, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Redesign payroll processes to reduce spreadsheets, manual workarounds, and dependence on individual institutional knowledge.
  • Optimize Workday Payroll functionality, configuration, reporting, workflows, and automation.
  • Identify opportunities to use artificial intelligence and other technology-enabled solutions to improve payroll accuracy and efficiency.
  • Develop a modern, scalable payroll operating model that supports continued organizational growth.
  • Establish and maintain payroll policies, procedures, controls, documentation, and governance standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Oversee wage-and-hour compliance, payroll tax requirements, deductions, and employee pay practices.
  • Support payroll requirements involving foreign nationals, visa holders, and other specialized employee populations.
  • Coordinate with third‑party providers regarding payroll tax remittance, year-end reporting, and related services.
Qualifications
  • At least 10 years of progressive payroll experience, including significant payroll leadership responsibility, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience transforming or modernizing payroll operations required.
  • Experience assessing manual or outdated payroll environments and implementing improved workflows, controls, and technology.
  • Extensive Workday Payroll experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize Workday Payroll functionality beyond routine system operation.
  • Multi‑state payroll experience required.
