National Project Associate — UHAB National About UHAB
The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) empowers low and moderate income residents to take control of their housing and strengthen their communities. Since 1973, UHAB has helped form hundreds of tenant associations and turned troubled rental buildings into over 1,300 Housing Development Fund Corporations (HDFCs), creating home ownership opportunities for over 30,000 households.
About UHAB NationalUHAB National works with communities across the country to build the knowledge, capacity, and local infrastructure needed to develop and sustain permanently affordable co-op home ownership. We draw on UHAB's fifty-plus years of experience in New York City to help local organizations adapt cooperative housing strategies to their own communities.
The PositionThe National Project Associate will coordinate and help facilitate classes for practitioners across the country who are learning to support and develop permanently affordable co-op home ownership. The audience includes nonprofit developers, community land trust staff, cooperative developers, lenders, and city officials. Working closely with the Director of UHAB National, the Project Associate will help develop training curricula and support technical assistance engagements, alumni relationships, and day-to-day program coordination.
Responsibilities- Assist with virtual and occasional in-person trainings, including self-paced course development, script writing, and video production support
- Research and create or revise training materials
- Maintain attendance records and certificates of completion
- Support technical assistance to organizations working with co-ops and future co-ops
- Coordinate with UHAB staff on Incubator and consulting work, and manage ongoing contact with alumni
- Draft and edit reports, presentations, and correspondence related to UHAB National's work
- Support outreach to program participants and partners, including email campaigns and website content
- 2 to 3 years of relevant experience (adult professional education, curriculum development, project management, or organizing/technical assistance connected to cooperative or shared ownership housing)
- Demonstrated commitment to cooperatives as a durable form of affordable home ownership, with direct experience in at least one permanently affordable model (limited equity co-ops, HDFCs, Mitchell-Lama, community land trusts, or similar)
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and primarily virtually
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency in Spanish is a plus
- Proficient with Zoom, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Docs
- Commitment to democratic member ownership and resident control as the core of the co-op model
UHAB's office is in Lower Manhattan. Some national and occasional international travel required.
Salary & Benefits- $63,388 annually. UHAB offers a generous benefits package including free and affordable medical and dental plans, long-term disability insurance, a 403b retirement plan, flexible spending accounts, paid vacation (3 weeks for new employees, 4 weeks after 2 years), 13 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 8 remote flex days, 12 sick days, and 1 personal day per year.
