Project Overview

The Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team has signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas‑fired power generation facilities in the United States. This project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress with early‑stage development that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year.

Job Summary

The Area Manager (Switchyard / GIS) is responsible for directing and managing all aspects of a single construction project, serving as the primary contact and ensuring effective coordination among different disciplines, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders. This role oversees site operations, including safety, quality, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, and compliance with engineering specifications and corporate policies. Key duties include maintaining client relationships, managing contracts and expenditures, implementing security and community relations plans, and ensuring adherence to safety regulations and environmental standards while delivering the project within scope, time, and budget.

Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision
  • Manage the organization and direction of construction and related activities of the project, including actions of Bechtel, subcontractors, suppliers, clients, and their representatives.
  • Act as primary client contact for all project field activities.
  • Oversee total site management, including supervision of construction craft personnel, field engineering, contract administration, cost and schedule, field procurement, finance and accounting services, and craft resource personnel as applicable.
  • Maintain client relationships and serve as the primary communication point between clients and field activities.
  • Oversee jobsite expenditures for labor, equipment, material, and services, ensuring field operations stay within budget.
Planning & Productivity
  • Determine workforce requirements.
  • Coordinate established area operational plans.
  • Coordinate activities with other disciplines or areas and clients’ resident representatives, as instructed by construction management.
  • Oversee the development of planning construction methods and procedures.
  • Oversee the development of projections and schedules for workforce, material, and equipment requirements.
  • Oversee the coordination of construction operations impact on external interfaces to ensure they coincide with the overall established schedules.
  • Oversee coordination with other subcontractors and external stakeholders to plan construction schedules.
Safety & Quality
  • Ensure the Zero Accident Philosophy is incorporated into all aspects of construction operations.
  • Ensure assigned construction operations and subcontractors’ performance comply with specifications and are within schedules and budgets.
  • Ensure the implementation of corporate/project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Monitor subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Monitor work activities and ensure the quality of work performed.
Technical
  • Work with Construction Field Engineers, Superintendents, and Craft Professionals to interpret engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents.
  • Manage engineering solutions with subcontractors, superintendents, and craft professionals.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, or other relevant technical disciplines from an accredited university (or international equivalent), plus a minimum of 10+ years of relevant work experience; or 14+ years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience in Combined Cycle, Switchyard, and GIS substations preferred.
  • Experience managing projects executed under a building trades agreement (union craft professionals) is desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction engineering practices related to all disciplines.
  • Coordinate construction completion walk‑downs and supervise the close‑out of all punch list items.
