Position Description

Fosters strong collaboration among leaders of the six Catholic schools in the Diocese of Cheyenne, located in Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette, Riverton, Rock Springs, and Sheridan, serving approximately 800 students. On behalf of the Bishop, oversees Catholic Schools in accord with Canon 796‑806. Supports principals and school leaders in deepening Catholic mission and identity, advancing professional growth, and strengthening the ongoing formation of school boards.

In support of these shared priorities, collaborates closely with the Bishop through an active and trusting relationship with the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • In‑depth knowledge of the Catholic faith.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of Catholic school education, mission, and purpose.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in school leadership: administration, governance, fiscal responsibility, supervising personnel, visioning, etc.
  • Working knowledge of canon law, Wyoming and Federal laws and regulations for schools.
  • Capacity to collaborate well with school leadership (principals, boards, etc.), clergy, diocesan and parish personnel, and the public.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality – discussing school or church business only with the person(s) necessary to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Understanding of the rural nature of the diocese and willing to sustain weekly interaction with school leadership.
  • Managerial, supervisory, training, and performance evaluation skills.
  • Excellent decision‑making skills, the ability to cope with considerable stress, and the capacity to multi‑task.
  • Excellent interpersonal, electronic, and written communication skills.
  • Able to be a self‑starter, work independently, determine priorities and direction.

Degrees, Licenses, and Certification:

  • M.A., M.Ed., MCSL
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D., preferred.
  • Engage regularly in ongoing faith formation and remain open and receptive to continued growth opportunities.
Experience
  • Five years of experience in Catholic education.
  • Five years of experience serving as a school principal or in district‑ or diocesan‑level leadership.
  • Experience working collaboratively with school boards and/or advisory councils.
  • Understanding of how to apply current research on instructional best practices to strengthen religious instruction and faith formation.
  • Experience supporting advancement and philanthropic initiatives.
Religious Practice
  • A fully initiated, practicing Catholic, free from any canonical penalties, and recognized for proven faith, good morals, and a good reputation.

Key Responsibility Areas KRA 1 | Identify and Sustain Common Elements of Catholic Mission and Identity across Catholic Schools

Leads and coordinates diocesan efforts to define, sustain, and advance common elements of Catholic Mission and Identity across Catholic schools. Collaborates closely with the Bishop, the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council (DCSC), the Director of Pastoral Formation, school leaders, and key stakeholders to establish shared expectations and resources, and provides ongoing oversight and support for faithful implementation across schools.

  • With input from school leaders and the DCSC, articulates and maintains a clear diocesan vision for Catholic education that defines the spiritual, academic, and personal outcomes the diocese seeks for students formed through its schools.
  • Ensures this shared vision functions as a guiding framework for schools, informing curriculum, culture, formation, and decision‑making while remaining responsive to the needs of local communities.
  • Identifies, develops, curates, and sustains diocesan resources that support schools in translating this shared vision into effective local practice.
  • Oversees and supports the formation of school leaders in the local implementation of the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS).
