Purpose StatementThe Affective Needs Para educator is responsible for providing support to students with emotional and behavioral challenges under the direction of a certified teacher. The role involves assisting in the implementation of educational and behavioral plans, fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment, and helping students develop the skills necessary to succeed academically and socially.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with affective needs.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students, focusing on emotional health, safety, and academic achievement.
- Implement behavior intervention plans designed to manage and improve student behavior.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to support the student’s educational and emotional development.
- Maintain classroom materials, equipment, and work areas to maximize student learning, provide a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements.
- Model conversations, manners, active listening, organizational skills, and social behaviors to aid development of interpersonal skills and problem‑solving strategies.
- Monitor students individually and/or in groups during assigned areas (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Monitor and report on student progress, including academic performance and behavior.
- Assist with daily living skills and social integration as needed.
- Participate in professional development and training related to affective needs and behavior management.
- Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g., students, teachers, administrators, and/or parents) to solve problems, provide information, and/or direct to appropriate parties.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Competencies include adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment and relevant software; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required for basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; reading a variety of manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, and presenting information to others; and understanding complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies include behavior management techniques and educational strategies for students with emotional disturbances; instructional procedures and practices; age-appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures;
conflict resolution; and stages of child development/behavior.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, gather and collate data, and use basic job‑related equipment. Flexibility and problem‑solving are required to identify issues and create action plans. Specific ability-based competencies include adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.
ResponsibilityResponsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.
Work EnvironmentThe job requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job involves 10% sitting, 60% walking, 30% standing. The work is performed under minimal temperature variations and with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates and LicensesNone specified. First Aid Certificate preferred. MANDT training and Continuing Education/Training.
