Summary

Under the direction of a certified teacher, provide support to students with special education needs within the assigned classroom by assisting with students’ individual medical and personal needs; practicing and reinforcing learning concepts with individual and/or small groups of students; assisting students in reaching academic, personal, and behavioral goals; adapting classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials as directed; collaborating with teachers to implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs);

monitoring and documenting student activities and behavior; and providing clerical support to teacher(s) and staff. Supports teachers and students within the PALS, CLAS, behavior intervention, essential skills, life program, progressive/adaptive learning, ADT, EDT, sign support, and other Specialized Assistance programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the direct supervision of a certified teacher, guide students individually or in small groups with lesson assignments and personal interactions for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic, personal, and behavioral goals. Monitor and adheres to student’s daily schedule and behavior plan to ensure consistency and academic/behavioral success. Administer tests, homework assignments, make‑up work.

    Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials and/or make accommodations under the direction of the special education teacher. Model conversations, manners, active listening, organizational skills, problem‑solving strategies, and everyday interaction to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner and to develop students’ daily living and behavioral skills. Employ appropriate de‑escalation and restraint techniques as needed to maintain a safe environment.

  • Support the individual medical and personal needs of student(s) as instructed by a health‑care professional and after attending training. Duties may include administering immediate first aid, oxygen, and medical assistance and performing diapering, tube feeding, toileting, etc. D 15%
  • Confere with certified teacher to assist in the evaluation of student progress, success, and record‑keeping. Document student’s daily activities, including behavior, completed assignments, on/off‑task times, etc., for the purpose of making data‑driven decisions. Provide verbal feedback and/or written documentation and report observations and incidents related to specific students. Maintain manual and electronic files and records as required. D 10%
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement and meet Individualized Education Plan (IEP) objectives. Observe students throughout the school day to evaluate progress toward IEP objectives and/or implement accommodations and/or modifications for the purpose of maximizing student learning. Attend IEP meetings, as requested, to provide feedback to teachers and/or parents in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives. D 10%
  • Monitor and supervise students in a variety of settings, including classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, etc. Implement various levels of discipline in accordance with school‑district and building policies to ensure a safe and positive learning environment. D 10%
  • Assist in making copies and obtaining, organizing, and maintaining classroom materials, equipment, and work areas to maximize student learning, provide a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements. D 10%
  • Assist other personnel as required which may include enrolling students, maintaining records, working with other classroom teachers, filing paperwork, organizing rooms, duplicating, laminating, correcting papers, etc. W 2%
