The role of Special Education Teacher is to support the instructional process by facilitating student success in academic areas, supervising students in the classroom and other assigned areas, developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual instruction within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional issues, and responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

This position reports to the Building Principal. Full‑time contract: 185 days, Monday‑Friday. Salary range: $61,575 – $94,083 base.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicate expectations, develop improvement methods, and reinforce classroom goals in the home environment; advise students to improve performance, health, problem‑solving, and personal issues; assess progress toward objectives and provide feedback.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, instructional groups, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Demonstrate required methods to perform classroom and/or subject‑specific assignments, providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Direct student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and student workers to provide an effective classroom program and meet individual student needs.
  • Instruct students to improve academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain a safe and optimal learning environment; monitor students in various educational settings.
  • Monitor student progress toward goals to adjust and ensure success.
  • Participate in the development of IEPs, measurable goals, and objectives to ensure access to the district curriculum and instruction on state standards and benchmarks.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars to gather or convey information required for performance.
  • Prepare and maintain written and/or electronic records (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, evaluations) to document progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Report incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse) to maintain personal safety, provide a positive environment, and adhere to education code and policies.
  • Respond to emergency situations, resolving immediate safety concerns and directing to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, etc., resolving issues and providing information.
  • Support classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities include applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment and relevant software, preparing and maintaining accurate records, performing algebra/geometry, reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating discussions, analyzing situations, following codes and policies, implementing age‑appropriate activities, creating lesson plans, understanding stages of child development, and applying behavioral management strategies.

Abilities required: schedule activities, gather and classify data, consider factors when using equipment, adapt to changing priorities, maintain confidentiality, exhibit tact and patience, work flexible hours, and solve problems independently.

Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision using standardized practices; direct others within a small work unit; utilize resources from other units as required.

Working Environment

Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; require fine finger dexterity. Approximate time spent: 34% sitting, 33% walking, 33% standing. Work conducted in a clean environment.

Experience

Job‑related experience is required.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Certificates

Must hold the appropriate Wyoming State Department of Education certificate, endorsement, and Highly Qualified Status.

Clearances

Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

FLSA Status

Exempt.
