Summary

Under the direction of a registered school nurse, provides support to the school and students by administering medication, first aid and medical assistance, maintaining required files and records, coordinating students’ health care needs with parents and personnel, monitoring student well‑being, maintaining equipment and inventory, completing vision and hearing screenings, and assisting other personnel in the school office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administers prescribed medication, first aid, and medical assistance to students as instructed by a registered school nurse (25%).
  • Assists with manual and electronic file and record keeping, including student health information and immunization records, accident reports, and file management (25%).
  • Confers with teachers, parents, and the registered school nurse to evaluate students’ health care needs and report observations (15%).
  • Monitors and supervises students in various settings, applying discipline in accordance with district policies (10%).
  • Assists other school personnel (e.g., enrolling students, answering phones) (5%).
  • Maintains equipment, supplies, medications, and work area; assists in ordering supplies (3%).
  • Responds to emergency situations such as injuries or fights (3%).
  • Participates in training, in‑services, and meetings (3%).
  • Distributes health information to staff, students, and parents (3%).
  • Assists with coordination of student vision and hearing screenings and follow‑up with referral tracking (5%).
  • Performs other duties as assigned (3%).
Education & Related Work Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No experience required.
  • Preferred: experience in a healthcare field.
  • Preferred: experience working with school‑age children.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within the first 30 days.
  • Medication administration training required within the first 30 days.
  • Immunization database training required within 30 days.
  • Training on delegated nursing procedures required within 30 days.
Technical Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
  • English language skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal relations skills.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Bilingual language skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development stages preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Trustees and district policies.

Materials and Equipment Operating Knowledge
  • Operating knowledge of personal computers and peripherals (required within 2 months).
  • Operating knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephone, copier, fax (required within 2 months).
  • Operating knowledge of office productivity programs (Microsoft Office Suite, e‑mail) (required within 2 months).
  • Operating knowledge of basic health screening equipment (required within 1 month).
Reporting Relationships & Direction/Guidance

Reports to: Registered School Nurse and Principal

Responsible for supervising the behavior and well‑being of students in the nurses office, playground, library, lunchroom, and bus loading/unloading areas.

Budget & Resource Responsibility
  • Monitors equipment, supplies, and medication inventory; recommends or assists in ordering necessary items.
