Job Title: Para educator – Special Education

Department: Paraeducators

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Year: 10 months

Salary

Schedule:

Para – 188 day

Pay: $16.52 hourly with benefits

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 hours daily

SUMMARY
:
Under the direction of a certified teacher, provide support to students with special education needs within the assigned classroom by reinforcing curriculum with individual and/or small groups of students; adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials as directed; collaborate with teachers to implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs); monitor student behavior; and provide clerical support to teacher(s) and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist students individually or in small groups to introduce and/or reinforce learning concepts, curriculum, assignments, and lesson plans; administer tests, homework, and make-up work; adapt classroom activities and materials as directed; model appropriate social behavior and develop students’ daily living and behavioral skills. (50%)
  • Collaborate with certified teachers to evaluate student progress, success, and recordkeeping; provide verbal and written feedback, and maintain manual and electronic files. (10%)
  • Implement and meet Individualized Education Plan (IEP) objectives, observe students throughout the school day, attend IEP meetings, and provide feedback to teachers and parents. (10%)
  • Monitor and supervise students in classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, and other settings; implement discipline as per school policies. (10%)
  • Assist in making copies and maintaining classroom materials, equipment, and work areas. (10%)
  • Assist other personnel as required, including enrolling students, maintaining records, filing paperwork, and organizing rooms. (2%)
  • Respond to emergency situations such as injured students or fights, and direct to appropriate personnel. (2%)
  • Attend meetings and in-service training as required. (2%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (4%)
Education and Related Work Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No experience required
  • Experience working with school‑age children preferred
  • Experience working with children with special needs preferred
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • First Aid certification preferred
Technical Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
  • English language skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal relations skills
  • Basic math skills
  • Bilingual language skills preferred
  • Knowledge of child development stages preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
  • Willingness to work effectively and compassionately with students with all levels of abilities
  • Willingness to adhere to attendance expectations and district procedures for absence reporting
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Trustees policies, District policies, and building and department procedures; communicate effectively with all people including those from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to recognize and maintain workplace safety; follow safety rules and report unsafe conditions
Materials and Equipment Operating Knowledge
  • Operating knowledge of personal computers and peripherals preferred; required within 2 months after hire
  • Knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copier, fax machine; preferred; required within 2 months after hire
  • Knowledge of office productivity programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite and e‑mail; preferred

  • Reports to:

    Certified Teacher and Principal
  • No supervisory responsibilities. Responsible for supervising the behavior and well‑being of students in and out of the classroom.
