Job Title: Para educator – Special Education
Department: Paraeducators
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Year: 9 months
Summary: Under the direction of a certified teacher, provide support to students with special education needs within the assigned classroom by reinforcing curriculum, adapting activities, collaborating on IEPs, monitoring behavior, and providing clerical support.
Responsibilities- Assist students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning concepts, administer assessments, and adapt classroom activities (50% of time).
- Record and report student progress, maintain files, and provide feedback to teachers and parents (10% of time).
- Collaborate to implement IEP objectives, observe progress, and attend IEP meetings (10% of time).
- Monitor students in various settings, enforce discipline, and ensure a safe environment (10% of time).
- Manage classroom materials and maintain organization (10% of time).
- Assist with recordkeeping, file paperwork, organize rooms, and perform related tasks (2% of time).
- Respond to emergencies (2% of time).
- Attend meetings and in‑service training (2% of time).
- Perform other duties as assigned (4% of time).
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. No experience required. Preferred: experience with school‑age children and with children who have special needs.
Licenses & CertificationsRequired: Criminal background check.
Preferred: First Aid certification.
Technical Skills & Knowledge- English language skills.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal relations skills.
- Basic math skills.
- Bilingual language skills (preferred).
- Knowledge of child development stages (preferred).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Work effectively with students at all ability levels.
- Follow attendance expectations and district procedures.
- Promote and follow Board and district policies.
- Recognize safety importance and follow safety rules.
- Operating knowledge of computers and office equipment (required within 2 months).
- Office productivity programs, e.g., Microsoft Office (preferred).
Reports to:
Certified Teacher and Principal
No supervisory responsibilities.
Responsible for supervising behavior and well‑being of students in the classroom, bus, recess, field trips, etc.
Job Requirements- High School/Trade School degree preferred.
